Personality

At the very heart of Hermione Granger is courage. That is why the Sorting Hat placed her in Gryffindor, though she admits it did seriously consider Ravenclaw. Over the years Hermione has proved that the Hat made the right choice. As far back as her first year, she was willing to face great dangers with Harry and Ron. As the years passed her courage and loyalty only grew. More than once she broke the rules and lied to authority figures in order to help Harry and Ron. Given how she was a stickler for the rules before becoming friends with them, this showed just how much she valued their friendship. One of the most poignant demonstrations of her loyalty came at the end of their sixth year: she turned away from school entirely and erased her parents’ memories of her. She was willing to give up everything to follow Harry, and that showed her to be a true Gryffindor.

Despite being in a world of magic and wizardry, Hermione still has a very practical mind. She often acts as the voice of reason for Harry and Ron, giving them both advice on a number of different topics. This practicality brought her into conflict on a number of occasions. In her third year, she walked out on Divinations because the discipline was so ridiculous in her eyes. In her fifth year she came into conflict with Luna Lovegood, who was more accepting of the unusual and possessed a much more open mind. Even with her strong support of Harry, Hermione has spoken against him like when he believed his dream about Sirius being tortured, or his obsession with Draco being a Death Eater. Yet it’s this same practical mind that helped her prepare for the journey she and her friends would take in destroying the Horcruxes.

Hermione has very strong beliefs, and is unafraid to take a stand for them. She’s not even afraid to go against her friends to do what she feels is right, as she demonstrated in their third year when she told a teacher about a mysterious Firebolt Harry received. In her fourth year she became aware of the unfair treatment of house-elves and started a campaign for their equal rights. No matter what other people told her, she wouldn’t give up. In her fifth year, she helped organize Dumbledore’s Army to fight against the Ministry’s interference in Hogwarts. And of course she stands up for Harry no matter what.

Hermione is a Muggle-born witch, which on more than one occasion put her under the line of fire. Even as early as her second year she was in danger because of her Muggle-born status, and the threat only grew more pronounced when Voldemort took over the Ministry. However, Hermione never denounced her heritage. In fact, on the run she declared she was proud to be a “Mudblood”. She clearly loves both her parents very much and tries to include them in her world, though in the end she’s forced to erase their memories for their own protection. Growing up in a Muggle home has also allowed Hermione to be more perceptive to the flaws in the magical community, such as their treatment of their fellow creatures or their laws concerning underage magic. She longs for understanding and respect between groups, and when she can she works hard to make that happen.

Hermione takes great pride in her intelligence and knowledge. Sometimes she can’t help but share her knowledge and comes off as a know-it-all. This can put a lot of people off, making it difficult for Hermione to form friendships. For a long time, her education was the most important thing for her. In fact, her worst fear in their third year was failing all her classes. Even in their sixth year she is disappointed that she didn’t achieve perfect scores in all her O. W. L. tests. She pushes herself hard when she studies and always wants to be the best. It’s a true testament of her devotion to Harry and Ron that she would give that up for them.
